Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin’s Teaching Philosophy and Pedagogy at Fogart
Fogart Artist Studio, founded in 2003 by Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin, offers a unique, CENE-based pedagogical model that integrates technical mastery, conceptual thinking, and personal artistic development. Through individualized mentorship and interdisciplinary practice, the program prepares students for both academic success and authentic artistic expression.
In 2003, Göknil founded Fogart Artist Studio in Istanbul, creating an independent space for art education and creative development. The unique pedagogical model developed in this studio is grounded in CENE pedagogy—approaching art as an emotional, conceptual, and existential whole.
She has mentored more than 100 students, 96% of whom have been accepted into fine arts faculties in Turkey and abroad. The educational model is based on personalized curricula shaped according to each student’s individual potential.
Göknil structures her pedagogy around interdisciplinary learning, intellectual risk-taking, and social responsibility. Her students move freely between painting, installation, jewelry design, digital media, and social art projects—producing conceptually deep, courageous, and socially aware works. Within the Art For Good Project, students focus on social awareness, ecology, and educational equality, gaining the ability to express both personal and collective experiences through artistic platforms.
Graduates are accepted into their desired art schools and programs, produce qualified works in undergraduate and postgraduate studies, organize exhibitions, manage studios, and educate the next generation of artists. The CENE Studio Model combines technical mastery, conceptual courage, and socially conscious production through courses, curriculum development, and mentorship.
Fogart Studio and Pedagogy
Since 2003, Göknil has been the founder and lead instructor of the Fogart Fine Arts Preparation Program. Fogart supports each student’s artistic journey through an individualized pedagogical model. The program includes:
Object and form studies, anatomy and human figure drawing, interior-exterior composition, perspective, and volume studies
Drawing from imagination, conceptual analysis, and advanced sketching techniques
Creative thinking, color theory, and the application of all contemporary painting techniques
Charcoal, colored pencil, watercolor, pastel, gouache, acrylic, oil painting, printmaking, mural, collage, assemblage, 3D, and digital techniques
Art history and contemporary art seminars, exhibition and museum visits, portfolio and interview preparation
Fogart enables students to explore conceptual depth and develop their own artistic language through an interdisciplinary perspective. Students gain experience across diverse fields; painting, sculpture, ceramics, interior architecture, industrial design, graphic design, textile and fashion design, photography, video, digital arts, animation, and stage design.
Fogart pedagogy encourages students to produce original narratives, merging technical mastery with conceptual thinking. This approach directly aligns with Göknil’s CENE philosophy: emotional depth, essential narrative, and creative expression are united.
Teaching Philosophy and Pedagogy
Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin’s pedagogy is based on the philosophy of Conceptual Essence Narrative Expressionism (CENE)
Fogart pedagogy transcends technical skill, cultivating holistic artistic awareness. For Göknil, education is a transformative journey into the essence of art.
Her pedagogical approach integrates the emotional intensity of Expressionism, the intellectual depth of Conceptual Art, and the existential layers of personal narrative. It provides a transformative framework that helps students merge technical ability with inner exploration, original visual storytelling, and conceptual thought—while also developing self-awareness, intuitive reasoning, and artistic identity.
Students are guided through personalized curricula in the following disciplines: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, interior architecture, industrial design, graphic design, textile and fashion design, traditional crafts, photography and video, visual arts, jewelry design, gastronomy, digital arts, animation, stage design, printmaking, mural art, exhibition, and book design.
Göknil trains her students not only in technical proficiency but also in critical thinking, conceptual problem-solving, and productivity within interdisciplinary projects. She supports each student in discovering their unique artistic voice and style while fostering a learning process that unites aesthetic and intellectual depth.
Fogart Studio – Fine Arts Preparation Program
The Fogart Fine Arts Preparation Program, under the mentorship of Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin, provides a comprehensive and rigorous foundation for emerging artists. The curriculum emphasizes both technical mastery and conceptual development, preparing students for higher education and professional practice in the visual arts.
Core Studies
Students engage in object and form studies, including composition based on real objects, exploring scale, placement, spatial planning, volume, texture, perspective, and form, as well as interior and exterior spatial relationships. Anatomy and figure drawing are integral, encompassing torsos, busts, live models, and archaeological museum studies. Students also develop skills in imaginative painting, conceptual analysis, and diverse drawing techniques, fostering creative thinking, design, and color theory.
Technical Training
The program integrates both traditional and contemporary methods. Students work with various 2D media—charcoal, colored pencil, watercolor, pastel, gouache, acrylic, and oil—as well as printmaking techniques such as etching, linocut, woodcut, and glass printing. They are introduced to mural painting, collage, assemblage, three-dimensional techniques, and digital art practices. Bauhaus-inspired applied arts principles are applied throughout, ensuring a holistic understanding of materiality and medium.
Conceptual and Theoretical Framework
Art history, contemporary art discourse, and studio-based theory are embedded throughout the curriculum. Students receive guidance on portfolio preparation, faculty interviews, and professional presentation, while discussions on philosophical, psychological, sociological, and ecological themes are encouraged. Mentors promote reflection, conceptual inquiry, and the translation of abstract ideas into tangible artistic work.
Integrated Learning Environment
The program extends learning beyond the studio. Students participate in curated visits to exhibitions, museums, biennials, and historical sites, fostering contextual understanding and engagement with contemporary practices. Mentors provide ongoing consultation regarding relevant exhibitions, research resources, and professional development opportunities.
Socially Engaged Practice
Since 2000, the program has included free or low-cost art education initiatives for underprivileged and rural communities, emphasizing social responsibility in art-making. Through projects such as the Art For Good Project, students are encouraged to apply their skills to socially, ecologically, and culturally meaningful contexts.
Pedagogical Philosophy – Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin
My teaching philosophy is rooted in Conceptual Essence Narrative Expressionism (CENE), a framework that synthesizes the emotional intensity of Expressionism, the intellectual rigor of Conceptual Art, and the existential layers of personal narrative. Students begin with self-exploration and stylistic discovery, progressing toward articulating authentic inner narratives through creative expression. This methodology fosters critical thinking, conceptual depth, and the development of distinctive artistic voices across both traditional and interdisciplinary media.
Through individualized guidance, students cultivate technical competence, aesthetic discipline, and conceptual fluency across painting, sculpture, ceramics, interior and industrial design, graphic arts, fashion, jewelry, photography, animation, stage design, printmaking, and digital media. Portfolio preparation, in-studio critiques, seminars on contemporary art and art history, and immersive experiences further enrich the program, ensuring students are well-equipped for academic advancement and professional practice.
Sincerely,
Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin
